Windows Phone App Recs, part 1
Having owned an Omnia 7 since January, and recently acquired a rather nice Lumia 800, I thought it would be good to list a few of the apps I’ve found useful over the year. Hopefully it’ll contain more useful apps than all the other lists! I plan to make a couple of posts in future listing some of the more unique apps available, as well as some of my favourite games, so watch out for them.
Without further ado…
BBC Radio Player
Free trial comes with basic stations, 99p for local and digital as well.
This is a great app for streaming BBC Radio, and usually works pretty well on 3G. The ability to pin stations to your home screen is very nice.
Cocktail Flow
Free trial with basic cocktails, £2.29 for shopping recommendations and extra cocktails.
A very neatly designed app. Select what you have in your bar, and it will show you which cocktails you can make. It’ll even tell you what you can buy to make more, and you can pin individual cocktails for quick access later.
Metrotube
Free unrestricted trial for a limited time
Probably the best YouTube app, with the ability to pin pretty much anything to your home screen. Unfortunately being discontinued in January due to Google policy changes, so get it soon!
The Guardian
A great application for news, if you happen to like the Guardian’s take on it (BBC News Mobile is a decent alternative). Access the Guardian’s videos and podcasts, with full multitasking and background streaming support.
Thumba Photo Editor
The best photo editor. Rotate, resize, crop, recolour, etc. Integration with the Pictures hub lets you easily access the editor from an individual picture.
eBay
Great app. Push notifications on outbids and won items, and the ability to pin individual items make this really useful when you’ve got a few auctions on the go.
WordPress
A really good way to manage your (WordPress) blog. Pin your blogs to the home screen, or make posts using your photos directly from the Pictures hub.
rowi
Free, £2.29 for live tile and push notification support
The best (in my experience) Twitter client. Of course, the native integration is great, but rowi is good for the extras: direct messaging, sharing pictures to somewhere other than SkyDrive, Twitter searches.
4th & Mayor
A great Foursquare client, if you’re into that sort of thing. Even if you don’t, it’s a good way to find about about new places if Bing Local Scout lets you down.
WPCentral
Free with ads, 79p for live tiles, notifications and podcast streaming (and no ads)
A great way to keep up to date with news from one of the best Windows Phone blogs.
